I started doing semi-professional shooting as gifts to my family and friends, and continue to learn from other photographers from all different cities, whether in person, online or during seminars. Weddings have been my main focus - to capture a couple's love and commitment to each other on their wedding days is my favourite kind of shoot. I believe your wedding photographer should also be your friend, to be there for some of the most intimate moments of your day and to be able to capture the laughter and tears of all those involved. I can't always promise I won't shed a few tears myself! Some of my first brides have since become mothers and it has been my great privilege to get some maternity, newborn and family shots of them, to continue to capture them on their journey.
My dad bought me a $15 camera at Disneyland on vacation in 1987, and so my love affair with photography began. I've always loved trying to capture images that looked like postcards and especially pictures of my family and friends who claim they're not photogenic - my theory is that everyone is photogenic, you just have to capture them in the right moment. In high school, I took a visual communications class where I first learned the magic inside a darkroom and continued to dabble in photography in university when I inherited my parents old Pentax SLR. I started taking more composed, artistic photographs, mainly to visually enhance the presentations I had to make in my English and Writing classes, but also for the pure joy of it.
Traveling affords endless inspiration to experiment with my camera, and my favourite trips so far have been to Europe. When I came back to Canada after living in Japan for a year, I enrolled in an introductory darkroom course at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto. Having always thought myself more of a writer, I was surprised to find I could also tell stories in a different medium. My love of the darkroom was also reignited - afterwards, I built my own and spent endless hours developing black and white images from film to print. Some of my favourites were from a second trip to Europe - this time to Italy and France - several of which I have included in my portfolio. After living in Toronto for 5 years, I moved to Calgary with my husband where I completed the Photography Certificate at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). I swapped out my film SLR and black and white film for their digital counterparts, learning from the evolving industry and new skills that come along with it. We’ve since crossed the country once more and found ourselves back in Toronto, where I’m starting to get into the photography market here, with all this fabulous city has to offer!
Thank you for stopping by Karla Plumb Photography. It has been my pleasure to introduce myself to you!
